We Tried The Financial Gym and Here's What We Think.
Spoiler Alert. We loved it. To celebrate April’s Financial Literacy month, we tried the much talked about Financial Gym, a “fitness” themed approach to finances. It was created by Shannon McLay, a financial advisor that wanted to make financial advice more accessible and personable (while still achieving #goals).
We scheduled a complimentary kick-off call right on the company’s website where they asked us top-line questions about finances, goals and provides an overview of “the gym”. The people that lead these calls are actually clients of the gym which is a comforting feeling “if they’re advocates, they must be happy with the gym”. They then matched us with a “trainer” that best fits our needs and we couldn’t be happier with Brenda.
The gym has a few membership plans, but we utilized the “spring finances cleaning” deal and it was just $80 per month, for a minimum of three months. You have 3 one hour meetings, a customized plan, plus anytime access to your trainer for questions. Additionally, if you are in NYC, you can take your meetings in person and they have a complimentary schedule of events with a loaded daily calendar for April being that it is literacy month.
Why we loved it:
They offer FaceTime or in-person meetings which feels super personal.
The kick-off was a full hour FaceTime with Brenda where we went through a detailed look at our finances, accounts, savings, spending and goals.
We did our follow-up meeting a week later in person at the gym, a large co-working office and event space that felt inviting with complimentary drinks and snacks.
Brenda prepared a personalized report that summarized my savings, spend and goals.
She then had a very detailed plan of weekly spend and monthly savings to get to my goal.
She points out tons of things that I would not have noticed, for example, in my 401k I had $37k just sitting in cash reserves, not being invested with my other money.
She also had great customized ideas on tricks to accomplish your goals such as buying a home, saving for a family, fertility, etc. (you’ll have to join to see that for yourself!)
Brenda also provided relevant podcasts and personalized playlist for me which emphasizes their fun take on finances.
