The Top 5 Beauty Products to Switch When You Find Out You're Pregnant
Author: Penina Gunyan, Mother of two, Masters in Nutrition and a Beautycounter Consultant
For decades, the medical community has been telling us about the importance of avoiding alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs, tuna, and other foods during and even leading up to pregnancy. However, the importance of reducing our exposure to harmful chemicals during this critical time of development has gained more visibility in recent years as doctors and researchers continue to find evidence of a connection between exposure to toxic environmental agents and fetal development.
Some environmental factors are outside of our control, but what we put on our skin is not. Not all chemicals are bad, water is a chemical after all, but knowing what to look for on labels and what chemicals to avoid can help give our children a better chance at a healthy life.
Ready to clean up your beauty routine, but don’t want to dump your entire bathroom cabinet? That’s ok! For the greatest impact, focus on what you use everyday, instead of once in awhile, and what sits on your skin for extended periods of time.
Product Category: Perfume
We love: Phlur
Why: Phthalates are typically found in fragrances and perfumes because they help the scent stick to the skin. They also disrupt the endocrine system and may cause birth defects. Use products that disclose all of the ingredients. “Fragrance” and “perfum” on the ingredient list is considered a trade secret so companies are not legally required to disclose what chemicals make up the scent.
Price: $18 for three 2mL samples (make a purchase and apply the $18 toward the price of a full 50mL bottle). $88 for 50mL.
Product Category: Foundation
We love: Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation by Beautycounter
Why: The formula is simultaneously lightweight and buildable for more coverage. It also minimizes the appearance of fine lines and pores. Foundations often contain polyethylene glycols (PEGs), which can be contaminated with known carcinogens. Beautycounter does not formulate any of its products with PEGs. The Retractable Foundation Brush is recommended for smooth and easy application.
Product Category: Lipstick
We love: Color Intense Lipstick in shade Backstage by Beautycounter
Why: This lipstick has long lasting color without synthetic flavors or fragrances that are linked to harmful health effects. Also, since all colored makeup is often contaminated with heavy metals like lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic, you can rest easy knowing that Beautycounter tests each batch of their makeup for heavy metals. Heavy metals are not usually added to makeup intentionally (they are natural contaminants in the colorants used, even with natural and organic brands) so companies are not required to add them to the ingredient list. Heavy metal levels are not necessarily consistent from batch to batch and the FDA has not issued any limits on heavy metals as contaminants.
Since we ingest more lipstick than we like to think, it’s important to shop health conscious companies that produce products in smaller batches, test every batch for heavy metal content and take action to reduce the amount in their products to zero or “no detect” levels.
Product Category: Eye Cream
We love: Rejuvenating Eye Cream by Beautycounter
Why: It feels so good on! This buttery eye cream also reduces puffiness, diminishes the appearance of fine lines and under-eye dark circles. It’s safer because it does not contain retinol or retinyl palmitate, two of the most common ingredients in anti-aging products.
Product Category: Body Lotion
We love: Countermatch Adaptive Body Moisturizer by Beautycounter
Why: This lightweight lotion helps skin adapt to the ever-changing aggressors of modern life by adjusting hydration levels throughout the day for a smooth look and feel, and a radiant glow. Even better that it’s made without silicones, synthetic polymers or synthetic fragrance ingredients.
